Lankhorst Manufactures Largest Lifting Slings Ever Produced at Portugal Facility

02-06-2026

Specialist in synthetic fibre ropes Lankhorst Offshore said it has produced the largest lifting slings ever manufactured at its facility in Paredes, Portugal.

The GAMA98® UHL 280 mm slings will be used in the lifting and removal of offshore jackets as part of the ongoing decommissioning of aging oil and gas infrastructure from the seabed.

According to the company, the project represents a new milestone in ultra-heavy lifting technology, combining a high diameter-to-minimum breaking load (MBL) performance with advanced engineering and precision manufacturing capabilities.

Advanced Engineering and Manufacturing

The GAMA98® slings are manufactured using high-efficiency Dyneema® sub-rope cores combined with a braided polyester jacket. The design is intended to deliver a high strength-to-weight ratio, low elongation, and reliable handling characteristics in both wet and dry operating conditions.

Additional product characteristics include abrasion resistance, UV resistance, and reduced operational and installation costs for offshore lifting operations.

Lankhorst said the project demonstrates the production capabilities of its facilities and teams, integrating engineering expertise, large-scale manufacturing capacity, and technical innovation for demanding offshore applications.

Focus on Higher Working Load Limits

Alongside current production activities, Lankhorst’s engineering teams are continuing studies aimed at reducing the overall safety factor and achieving higher Working Load Limits (WLL) for future ultra-heavy lifting solutions.

The company stated that these developments are intended to establish new industry benchmarks in offshore lifting and decommissioning operations.
